I'm a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the Philosophy of Technology at the University of Edinburgh. I used to hold the same position at Oxford, and did my PhD at MIT. I’m also Senior Research Affiliate at the Centre for Technomoral Futures and a Fellow in Digital Ethics and Governance at the Jain Family Institute.

I study the ethical, social, and political implications of technology. My current projects concern how values play a role in technologies; the notions of bias and neutrality in algorithms, especially search engines; human-robot relationships; and methods of ethical engineering. I also write about the nature of desire and how we communicate about it.

For three years, I was a director of PIKSI Boston, a summer program for undergraduates from underrepresented groups.

In a past life, I worked on the design of the strategy game Age of Empires (and at one point was the world’s number one ranked player).
